August 22, 2024 - I recently read a note about Bees. About how we've already discovered aliens and we just call them bees. It referenced a Cosmos episode with Neil deGrasse Tyson about bees communicating the location of a resource (here's the episode for context: https://youtu.be/ubE9hjrsHmI )
This made me think of a time I was watching the preparations for a cargo flight and thinking about controlled chaos. From the outside looking in (although I was inside looking out), I see disorder, rapid direction changes, shouts, and horns, and the crashing of hitches, trailer tongues hitting the pins, and containers striking the guides. Mindless industry? What the hell is going on? Everything was in motion, but at the end of all this activity, the flight was loaded and ready to go.
From the inside looking out, the training, procedures, and motivation make a difference, and it makes more sense. Everyone knows their job, where to look, and what to do. Somehow, nothing hits anything (destructively).
With any activity, we control entropy. We're squishing the edges of chaos into some sort of order we imagine up and then we take off.
