Exhaustion

September 5, 2024 - So many people frequently complain about their overwhelming busyness or brag about their hectic lives. It's as if being busy has become a status symbol in our society, a way to showcase our importance or productivity.

"I'm so exhausted I can barely cope."

"I'm swamped with other things right now."

"I'm so busy I can't think."

These statements (especially the accompanying body language) are like a form of performance art, where expressing exhaustion or a lack of motivation becomes a way to connect with others, even through shared misery. It's almost as if we wear our fatigue like a badge of honor, using it to signal our commitment to our responsibilities and tasks.

However, ponder this:

"Sustained exhaustion is not a badge of honor; it's a mark of stupidity."

― Jason Fried, It Doesn't Have to Be Crazy at Work

This quote resonates deeply with me. Why? Because it highlights the irony of how people often claim to have no control over their lives when, in reality, they are the ones in control. Many willingly relinquish their power to manage their time and energy, choosing to be (or act) overwhelmed instead.

So many strategies and practices are available to help reclaim our energy and sense of control. From setting boundaries and prioritizing self-care to learning the art of saying no, we have the tools. Yet, despite this knowledge, many are still living in a cycle of busyness and fatigue. Why? Is it a claim of relevance? Is it habit, complacency, or even a fear of stepping away from the chaos?

Whatever the reason, people should learn to recognize that they have the power to change their circumstances.

The question remains: why don't they take action?

I might have to give this some thought.

Meh.
